Head Start Program Overview
Head Start is a nationally recognized child development program for income eligible children and families and is one of the largest components of Skyline CAP. The program welcomes and invites children with disabilities and/or special needs to participate at no cost to the family.
Skyline CAP's Head Start Program aims to provide low-income children with comprehensive preschool services that promote school readiness, social, emotional, and physical health, along with a strong parent involvement component in the educational experience of their children. The Skyline CAP Head Start program currently has a funded enrollment of 181 children, and operates in 6 counties (Greene Madison, Rappahannock, Warren, Shenandoah and Page Counties). Children served are three and four years old, and 90 percent of the families must have incomes at or below 100 percent of federal poverty level.
The Mission
Skyline CAP, Inc. Head Start strengthens the child by strengthening the family unit. Parents are seen as the prime educators of their children.
The Vision
We have a vision. . . . . To promote stronger families by empowering and strengthening them through parent training, workshops and other ways that will encourage self confidence and awareness.
In the Head Start Classroom
A typical day in the classroom includes breakfast, lunch, reading (listening to and reading books), and science activities, block building, creative art, moving to music, working with numbers, water/sand play, and pretend housekeeping. Children brush their teeth and are exposed to basic hygiene and nutrition lessons. Head Start activities are designed to help children grow mentally, socially, emotionally, and physically. Staff members are loving, accepting and understanding; well prepared to foster a nurturing environment for the children. Children leave Head Start prepared to attend kindergarten.
The parent involvement plan¹ includes activities which enhance the parent’s role and useful influence in their children’s development. Parents have opportunities to participate on various committees, in classrooms as volunteers or observers, and to work with their own children in cooperation with Head Start.
